Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
