The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
